We would like to share with you the successful completion of a furnace demolition project that took place recently. The project involved the demolition of the complete furnace sidewall and hearth of a 9.9m circular arc furnace, along with the removal of various auxiliary furnace equipment.
The scope of work included the removal of 2 copper matte tap blocks, 2 copper slag tap blocks, 182 copper plate coolers in the side wall, and several auxiliary furnace equipment items such as fume hoods, launders, platforms, hand railings, furnace supports, flexible hoses, and more.
The project presented numerous challenges. From the get-go, there was difficulty onboarding the team as a result of limited time during the December holidays. In addition, there was a limited time frame when it came to employing and training local labourers. We were also not allowed to damage the coolers which meant carefully removing them from the furnace, and packing and strapping the Copper Coolers onto wooden pallets for refurbishment. Limited space meant only one access area when moving the demolished material and copper coolers as well as increased difficulty when using the Brokk machines. Overall this resulted in the site being very congested with numerous activities taking place simultaneously.
Despite these challenges, DGC finished the project with zero incidents, accidents, or injuries, and completed the project on time and within budget. This is a testament to our team's dedication, hard work, and professionalism.
